MURFREESBORO — An
MTSU doctoral student who was chosen Teacher of the Year for the Middle
Tennessee grand division will be the guest on the next “MTSU On the Record”
radio program.
Host Gina Logue’s interview with Kyle Prince will air from
5:30-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, and from 8-8:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, on WMOT-FM
(89.5 and www.wmot.org).
The Tennessee Department of Education bestowed the honor
upon Prince Sept. 24 at a banquet in Nashville. Prince, an algebra II teacher
at Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro, is pursuing his doctorate in math
education at MTSU.
With Prince’s title comes appointment to the state’s Teacher
Advisory Council, a group of 12 teachers who meet quarterly to discuss ideas
for improving education in Tennessee and hosting roundtable discussions with
other educators from around the state.
When it comes to capturing the interest of students who find
math impossibly challenging, Prince said, “I really think it just comes down to
finding an interest of theirs that relates to some piece of mathematics that
you’re doing … and then showing them how it’s used in the real world in
whatever career they go into.”
In addition, Prince has received a Presidential Award for
Excellence in Mathematics from the National Science Foundation.
