MURFREESBORO — The
next edition of the “MTSU On the Record” radio program proves that the pen is
at least as mighty as the sword in both peacetime and wartime.
Host Gina Logue’s interview with Matthew Brown, a
facilitator of the Writers’ Corps creative writing workshop and the editor of
DMZ, an annual literary journal for student veterans, will air from 5:30 to 6
p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, on WMOT-FM
(89.5 and www.wmot.org).
Brown, who also is a lecturer in the Department of English as
well as a poet, showcases the poetry and prose of military veterans enrolled at
MTSU in DMZ. The journal was founded in April 2013.
Writers’ Corps, which Brown co-founded in 2009, aims to
encourage veterans to articulate their thoughts through writing and to craft
their stories through collaboration and revision.
Brown is trying to turn the program into an official
tax-exempt, nonprofit organization, in part because he has received such
positive feedback from people across the country who want to replicate the
program.
“One of the things that we do that nobody else does is …
working on what I’m calling ‘post-traumatic social growth’,” said Brown.
“You’ve got this kind of collusion between the larger public and these
veterans, and you’ve got this receptive ear and this leadership stance that
these vets can take.”
Audio clips of several student-veterans reading their writings
are included in the broadcast.
