MURFREESBORO — An
MTSU professor exploring the meaning of girls’ lives as constructed in Thailand
will share her insights in an upcoming public lecture.
Dr. Ida Fadzillah Leggett will speak on “Beautiful Girls:
Exploring the Interconnections between Childhood Studies and Feminist Studies
from an Anthropological Perspective” from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in
Room N127, the SunTrust Room, of MTSU’s Business and Aerospace Building.
“This presentation argues that exploring how the influences
of money, labor, and love work at the everyday level to add to feminist
understandings of how gender identity is influenced, negotiated and at times
reconfigured in the reality of girls’ lives,” Leggett said.
Leggett’s speech will be based specifically on the lived
experiences of girls using her own work among teenage girls in Thailand as a
case study.
“This presentation examines how anthropological research among
children adds to scholarly and popular understandings of how contemporary
social identities are established and young lives are experienced in this
globalizing world,” said Leggett, a professor in the Department of Sociology
and Anthropology.
This lecture, which is free and open to the public, is part
of the Women’s and Gender Studies Research Lecture Series.
