MURFREESBORO — The
gap between men’s and women’s wages will be the subject of an information
campaign at MTSU on Equal Pay Day.
The Murfreesboro chapter of the American Association of
University Women will staff an information table from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday, April 4, in the Student Union Building.
Off-campus visitors attending the daytime events should obtain a special
one-day permit from MTSU’s Office of Parking and Transportation at http://www.mtsu.edu/parking/visit.php.
Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity in
1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men’s and
women’s wages.
April 4, 2017, represents the date until which the average
American woman must work into 2017 just to catch up with an average man’s
entire earnings for 2016, according to NCPE.
Equal Pay Day T-shirts in men’s and women’s cuts, sizes S
through 4X, will be available for $20 each. The shirts are red to symbolize how
women are “in the red” financially compared to their male counterparts. All
proceeds will benefit AAUW of Tennessee.
For more information, contact Dia Cirillo, president of
AAUW-Murfreesboro, at 773-677-4238 or President@AAUW-Murfreesboro.org.
