MURFREESBORO — An
MTSU student who combines her love of marine biology with her love of
photography will be the guest on the nexst “MTSU On the Record” radio program.
Host Gina Logue’s interview with Brooke Fitzwater will air
from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 26,
on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.
The organismic biology and ecology major from Rockvale,
Tennessee, did not let living in a landlocked state deter her from pursuing her
love of marine biology. Fitzwater has been to Chile three times to perform
undergraduate research.
Fitzwater’s third excursion to the South American nation was
a 10-week research project that remains unfinished. She said she hopes to
obtain a Fulbright grant or other funding to complete her work.
“We were looking at how a predator can influence the habitat
selection of a small (species of) fish,” said Fitzwater. “They’re
cryptobenthic, which means that they live on the bottom and they blend in with
their surroundings.”
While in the South American country, Fitzwater took
advantage of the beautiful scenery to hone her talents for photography and
videography. She earns money to keep her academic dreams alive at www.brookefitzwaterphoto.org,
where she has posted still photos and video of the Chilean coast and its marine
life.
