[221] Renowned trumpeter Wendholt opens MTSU’s 15th Jazz Artist Series Nov. 7

MURFREESBORO — Renowned jazz trumpeter Scott Wendholt will join MTSU's Jazz Ensemble 1 and jazz faculty members Thursday, Nov. 7, to kick off the 2013-14 MTSU Jazz Artist Series in Hinton Hall inside MTSU's Wright Music Building.

Tickets for the Nov. 7 concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., are $10 for the general public. Admission is free for MTSU students, faculty and staff with a valid ID. Discounts for area music students and educators also are available.

“We are certainly fortunate to have Scott coming to share his music in all of its facets — the playing, improvising, composing and educating,” said Jamey Simmons, director of jazz studies in MTSU’s School of Music.

Wendholt, a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music, played for six years with the acclaimed Vincent Herring's Quintet and has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Africa and Japan with the quintet and others.

He has more than 60 CDs to his credit, has played with big-band orchestras including the Carnegie Hall Big Band and Buddy Rich Big Band, and has been a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra for the last decade.

“Some of our students are exploring his music in depth and are arranging some of his compositions for large ensemble,” said Simmons. "This and the collaboration with the faculty members will make his visit a memorable event."

MTSU jazz faculty members joining Wendholt for the Nov. 7 concert include Don Aliquo, tenor saxophone; Pat Coil, piano; Derrek Phillips, drums; and Jim Ferguson, bass.

Wendholt also will present a free public educational clinic at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 7 in Room 303 of MTSU’s Saunders Fine Arts Building.

Currently in its 15th season, the MTSU Jazz Artist Series brings internationally renowned jazz artists to campus for performances and educational workshops. Past guest artists have included some of the most important jazz musicians and educators in jazz history.

The 2013-14 series continues Thursday, Feb. 13, with a performance by MTSU alumni Shaun Purcell, a jazz guitarist, and drummer Jim White. The third concert in the series is set for Saturday, April 5, with jazz saxophonist John Ellis.
