MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —
MTSU’s Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center’s
continuing partnerships with Midstate businesses includes a popular longtime
restaurant chain open 24 hours a day.
Representatives from the center recently presented a
certificate of appreciation to Waffle House Senior Vice President Ken Wright and Cristin Wittwer, area people director, at the restaurant located at
1928 S. Church St.
The Daniels Center and its Veterans Transitioning Home Office are presenting certificates of
appreciation to companies who have hired MTSU student veterans or family
members, and for demonstrating continuous support to this population.
The restaurant recently hired Will Stallings, the son of center Director Hilary Miller, and a
senior at Central Magnet School. Hilary Miller is married to Joel Miller, a retired U.S. Army
lieutenant colonel and former chair of the MTSU
Department of Military Science.
Hilary Miller and Keith
M. Huber, senior adviser for veterans and leadership initiatives at MTSU,
made the presentation of the plaque featuring a photo of Charlie and Hazel
Daniels in front of a U.S. flag and commemorative coins.
Wittwer, a military spouse whose husband formerly served in
the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, said she was “at a loss for
words. I am so honored to receive these coins from Gen. Huber and Dr. Miller. I
am so grateful for everything you have done for our country and continue to do
for our veterans.”
Huber is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general. He served
38 years before retiring and joining MTSU in January 2015. His leadership and
advice to university President Sidney A.
McPhee and other administrators eventually led to the establishment of the
3,200-square foot, $333,000 veterans’ center on the first and third floors of
Keathley University Center.
Huber visited with Waffle House customers and identified
with those who were military veterans, learning about their experiences and
thanking them for their service.
The Veterans Transitioning Home Office assists students with
all aspects of the career decision-making and job search processes. Shane Smith
is veterans’ employee search agent.
