[021] ‘MTSU On the Record’ explores emotionally savvy library leadership

MURFREESBORO — The importance of emotional intelligence in operating a modern library will be the subject of the next “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Jason Martin, associate dean of MTSU’s James E. Walker Library, will air from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.

Martin will lead a webinar for library professionals nationwide on the topic of “Emotional Intelligence and Library Leadership” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, under the auspices of the Library Leadership and Management Association, or LLAMA.

Martin said the four elements of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management — all qualities that library administrators can use to help both patrons and staff adjust to different methods and procedures.

“Libraries have experienced so much change over the past two decades,” said Martin. “One of the biggest things now that libraries look for when they look for a new director or dean is someone who can manage and facilitate change.”
