[426] With variety, MT Sampler Camp returns to campus this summer

MURFREESBORO — The MT Sampler Camp, which provides students with glimpses into the numerous academic programs MTSU offers, returns to campus June 8-12 for middle school students and June 22-26 for high school students.

Registration is underway and attendance is limited to 40 students per week. To register or for more information, visit www.mtsu.edu/sampler or contact Nancy Stubblefield at Nancy.Stubblefield@mtsu.edu.

The camp features 17 academic areas, highlighting 50 careers. Rotations will include aerospace, agriculture, art, business, chemistry, computer science, concrete industry, education, engineering, equine, forensic science, geology, mass communication, mathematics, nursing, physics and recording industry.

Programs will include immersive lectures and hands-on activities led by the MTSU faculty. Aside from students enjoying a hands-on approach in cutting-edge facilities, the camp will also include field trips to:

• MTSU’s nationally recognized aerospace program at the Murfreesboro Airport;

• MTSU’s Experiential Learning and Research Center (the farm in Lascassas, Tennessee); and

• The horse science program at Tennessee Miller Coliseum.

The cost is $150 per student, and includes a T-shirt, backpack, notebook, field trips, lunch, snacks and water.

Stubblefield, an alumna of the university’s College of Mass Communication and now an academic adviser in the college, serves as camp director. Her initial idea for this innovative summer camp stemmed from her own high school-aged daughter’s indecision for a career pathway.

“We hope to open the minds of young students to the idea that attending college is more than just a suggestion made by a high school guidance counselor,” she said. “Seeking a college degree means finding one’s passion and cultivating an education that will lead to a long-lasting and rewarding career.”

The camp will begin Monday, June 8, in Room 101A of the Ned McWherter Learning Resources Center.
