MURFREESBORO — November
is nontraditional at MTSU with a month-long celebration of adult and
nontraditional students.
The Nontraditional Student Celebration, an appreciation of adult
students who are married, have children, work full-time or have other
responsibilities outside their education, starts Monday, Nov. 5. That’s when
Nontraditional Student Week kicks off with free T-shirts for the first 100
students to visit Room 330 of the Student Union Building between 8 a.m. and
4:30 p.m.
Bill Riggs, coordinator in MTSU’s Office of Financial Aid
and Scholarships, will talk to nontraditional students about financial aid at a
“lunch and learn” session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, in Student
Union Room 221.
The honor society for nontraditional students, Pinnacle,
will hold its induction ceremony from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in
the Tennessee Room of the James Union Building.
Former state Rep. John Hood, director of community
engagement at MTSU, will be the keynote speaker at the Nontraditional Student
Week Dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the Student Union Ballroom.
The dinner is free and open to the public. However, due to
limited seating, tickets must be obtained in advance by calling 615-898-5812.
The deadline for obtaining tickets is Friday, Nov. 2.
Lisa Schrader, MTSU’s director of health promotion, will
discuss “Managing Your Student Body” in a bring-your-own-lunch seminar from
noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Student Union Room 221. This event is in
support of Diabetes Awareness Month.
The celebration is sponsored by the June Anderson Center for
Women and Nontraditional Students. For more information, contact Valerie Avent,
the center’s assistant director, at 615-898-5812 or valerie.avent@mtsu.edu.
