MURFREESBORO — Dr. Ming Wang mastered the art of Chinese violin to escape Mao Tse-Tung’s despotic regime.

The well-known Nashville-based ophthalmic surgeon will speak at MTSU Thursday, Oct. 4, about China’s feudalistic past and life during the Cultural Revolution, the 1949 takeover of China by the Communists.

Wang will speak to Instructor Corey Perkins’ Introduction to Globalization at 2:40 p.m. Oct. 4 in Room 121 of the Cason-Kennedy Nursing Building.

Wang also will share his views about doing business with China today.

To avoid being condemned to a life of poverty and hard labor during the Cultural Revolution, Wang learned how to play Chinese violin er-hu. He will perform musical selections for the class along with classical guitarist Carlos Enrique.

A graduate of Harvard and MIT, Wang performed the world’s first 3-D LASIK procedure and has performed more than 55,000 surgeries in his career. He also established the Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration, a nonprofit organization that has helped patients in more than 40 states and 55 countries.

Attendees are advised to arrive early because seating is limited. For more information, contact the Global Studies Program office at 615-494-7744 or mtglobal@mtsu.edu.
