AUTHORS DISCUSS ‘ONWARD SOUTHERN SOLDIERS’ ON WMOT-FM
MTSU Alums Traci Nichols-Belt and Gordon T. Belt Take on Confederate Christianity
MURFREESBORO—Traci Nichols-Belt and Gordon T. Belt, authors of “Onward Southern Soldiers: Religion and the Army of Tennessee in the Civil War,” will discuss their book at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 11, and 8 a.m. Sunday, June 17, on “MTSU on the Record” with host Gina Logue on WMOT-FM (89.5 and wmot.org).
The husband-and-wife historians, both MTSU graduates, explore how the Bible was interpreted by civilian chaplains, Army chaplains, officers and infantrymen to bolster support for the Confederate cause.
With Nichols-Belt, an ordained minister, providing much of the narrative, and Belt uncovering primary sources such as diaries, letters, journals and sermons, “Onward Southern Soldiers” explains the ideological fodder that stoked Rebel forces in victory and consoled them in defeat.
