MURFREESBOROPublic-television supporters and "Little House on the Prairie" enthusiasts nationwide can own a piece of musical history with MTSU's imprint beginning Sunday, June 3.

That's when Nashville Public Television, NPT, and more than 175 other Public Broadcasting Service member stations will begin airing “Pa’s Fiddle: The Music of America” and offering DVDs and CDs of the old-time music performances as June pledge-drive member gifts.

“Pa’s Fiddle,” recorded in January at Nashville’s Loveless Barn, begins airing locally at 7 p.m. Sunday. It features live performances of "Buffalo Gals," "The Girl I Left Behind Me," "Old Dan Tucker" and more by Ronnie Milsap, Randy Travis, Rodney Atkins, Ashton ShepherdThe RoysNatalie Grant and NBC’s “The Sing-Off” champions Committed.

It’s co-produced by Dr. Dale Cockrell, director of MTSU’s renowned Center for Popular Music and a scholar of the music of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book series, and actor/producer Dean Butler, who played Wilder’s husband, Almanzo, in the “Little House” TV series.

The Making of ‘Pa’s Fiddle,’” an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary created by MTSU students and professors, will be part of a special “Pa’s Fiddle Memory Pack” PBS thank-you gift package.

PBS is featuring an excerpt of the “Pa’s Fiddle” special at http://ow.ly/bhaql. A promo on the MTSU-created documentary is available at http://ow.ly/bhax8.

"Professor Tom Neff and I recruited a group of video-production students to do videotaping and editing of the behind the scenes and preparation for the concert,” explains Dr. L. Clare Bratten, associate professor in MTSU’s Department of Electronic Media Communication.

“We were so impressed with their level of professionalism; even the professional crew from Santa Fe Productions at first didn’t realize they were students! The students did this work outside regular classes—during winter break, weekends and spring break. Their level of commitment and the quality of their work was extraordinary."

EMC major Sam Willey, a junior at MTSU, directed “The Making of ‘Pa’s Fiddle’” in Nashville. Haley Ellis, who graduated last December from MTSU, and Megan Brantley, another junior EMC major, are line producers. Other team members included Hayden Mason, Jacob Strong and Clay Tipton and EMC Professor Matt Foglia.

The “Pa’s Fiddle” project originated in a CD compilation of tunes played by Wilder's father, Charles, in the beloved children's books. Cockrell is the founder, owner and president of Pa’s Fiddle Recordings LLC, a record label dedicated to recording the music referenced in Wilder’s books.

A new CD, “Pa's Fiddle: American Fiddler,” featuring a portion of the 127 songs mentioned in the “Little House” books, will be released in stores on Tuesday, June 5, to commemorate the PBS special. It’s also available online at www.pasfiddle.com.

“I’ve been working on the ‘Pa’s Fiddle’ project for about 12 years now,” Cockrell says, “and sometimes it’s felt like we’ve been pushing that boulder up that hill every day. Now we’re finally at the top and get to share this music with everyone.”

“Dale loves traditional American music, and I love the stories of American pioneer life written by Laura Ingalls Wilder,” Butler adds. “Having this opportunity to share the music Laura recalled in her unforgettable novels is nothing less than a dream come true.”

The behind-the-scenes DVD features more comments from Cockrell, Butler and several of the artists.

“This is a wonderful learning experience for us all,” Neff said. “It’s a unique and wonderful way MTSU is tying the professional world to the student world. We’re always looking for real-world projects, so this is a great mix.”

PBS supporters who donate $75 will receive a copy of the “Pa’s Fiddle: The Music of America” CD, which includes songs from the special. $150 donors will receive the “Pa’s Fiddle Combo” of the CD and the DVD of the special, which includes the performances and some bonus content.

The “Pa’s Fiddle Memory Pack” gift with a $275 PBS donation includes:

·         the MTSU behind-the-scenes documentary DVD;
·         the show CD and DVD;
·         a “Pa’s Fiddle Primer” CD; and
·         a DVD of “Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder,” a 2010 documentary co-produced and directed by Butler (http://lauraslittlehouselegacy.com).

PBS supporters can call their local stations or visit station websites during June for more information on the “Pa’s Fiddle” broadcast schedule and membership gifts. Locally, viewers can visit http://ow.ly/bhjoV to donate to NPT and select the “Pa’s Fiddle” gifts.
