MTSU Symphonic Band to feature Arutunian trumpet concerto April 24

MURFREESBORO—A world-renowned trumpet concerto by Alexander Arutunian will be featured during a free public concert by the MTSU Symphonic Band on Tuesday, April 24.

The concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Hinton Music Hall inside the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.

MTSU trumpet professor Michael Arndt is the featured soloist for the work.

“The Alexander Arutunian Trumpet Concerto is one of the cornerstone works of the trumpet repertoire,” said Arndt. “It was written in 1950 by Arutunian, an Armenian-Soviet composer, for trumpeter Timothy Dokshitzer.

“It is an exciting concerto made up of three movements that move seamlessly from one to the next. The concerto features music characteristically Armenian in its melodic and rhythmic construction and loosely based on Armenian folk songs.”

In addition to the trumpet concerto, the MTSU Symphonic Band will perform “Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual” by Robert W. Smith, “On the Mall” by E.F. Goldman, “Canzona” by Peter Mennin and “Symphonic Dance No. 3” by Clifton Williams.

Craig Cornish, conductor of the Symphonic Band, noted that the Mennin and Williams pieces “are considered cornerstone works of the modern wind-band literature. And Goldman’s ‘On the Mall’ is one of the most popular marches in band literature, right behind Sousa’s ‘Stars and Stripes Forever.’”
