Registration Ends Soon for Sept. 25 Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science Conference for Girls

(MURFREESBORO) — Registration has been extended until Monday, Sept. 13, for the 14th annual Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science Conference, event organizers said recently.

EYH will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, across the MTSU campus. Check-in is at 8 a.m. in the McWherter Learning Resources Center in the heart of campus. The conference will end at 3 p.m.

EYH is a hands-on science and math conference for girls in grades 5-8. The GRITS (Girls Raised in Tennessee Science) EYH is for girls in grades nine through 12. Girls from across the middle Tennessee region are welcome to attend.

“EYH gives girls a chance to investigate science and math careers,” said Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross, event director, MTSU chemistry professor and director of the Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Center.

“It’s a chance for them to talk with women who are in math and science careers, to attend workshops for girls, participate in hands-on activities and meet other girls interested in science and math,” she added.

Off-campus professionals and MTSU faculty members and students will be workshop presenters. Dr. Amy Massengill, an MTSU biology professor whose expertise is in the field of veterinary medicine, will be the morning keynote speaker.

The GRITS EYH registration fee is $15 for high-school girls. The EYH fee is $12 for middle-school girls. Limited scholarships are available, Iriarte-Gross said. The fees include lunch, T-shirt and goody bags.

The EYH committee moved the event date to Sept. 25 this year so it would not conflict with any MTSU home football games. EYH usually is held later in the fall.

Individual participants or teacher-led groups can register online at www.mtsu.edu/eyh. Click on “Registration” or “Registration Page.” Parents, guardians or teachers must complete, electronically sign and submit the permission form. The registration fee should be sent to: Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross, MTSU EYH, P.O. Box X161, Murfreesboro, Tenn., 37132. Please make the check out to AAUW/EYH.
