(MURFREESBORO)—MTSU welcomes a special lecture by photographer Henry Horenstein on Monday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in support of his new exhibit, “Honky Tonk,” in the university’s Baldwin Photographic Gallery.
The free public lecture, which will be held in Room 103 of the Bragg Mass Communication Building on campus, will be followed by a reception.
Horenstein’s exhibit, which has been shown at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, chronicles the end of the honky-tonk era, a period when country music artists—even the most popular and famous—often performed for fans at small venues. The black-and-white images examine the intimacy and lack of boundaries that existed between performers and audience prior to the age of huge stadium performances. Highlights include portraits of artists at the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Theater, Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, festivals, juke joints and roadhouses.
The exhibit is on display through Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Baldwin Photographic Gallery, and is always free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and 6 to 9:45 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 615-898-2085.
