REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR OCT. 25 MTSU EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS IN MATH AND SCIENCE CONFERENCE FOR GIRLS


(MURFREESBORO) — Up to 300 Girls in grades 5-8 can register online to attend the 12th annual Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science Conference, event director Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross said recently.
For the second year, a Girls Raised in Tennessee Science EYH will be held for girls in grades 9-12, Lacey Fleming, GRITS assistant director, said, adding that there is room for 60 girls to attend.
EYH and GRITS EYH will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at sites across the MTSU campus.
Karen Habucky, who is the president of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and has been a member of the association for more than 15 years, will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Habucky received a B.S. in pharmacy and Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences with an emphasis in pharmacokinetics from the University of Pittsburgh under the guidance of Dr. Raman Venkataramanan.

Student and their parents/guardians must complete the registration on the national EYH Web site before submitting the permission form. E-mail confirmation of registration will be within 10 days after the forms have been submitted.
There is a $12 fee to attend EYH and $15 fee to attend GRITS EYH, event organizers said.
Girls in grades 5-8 will attend three workshops. The high-school girls will attend two hands-on labs, have a mentoring lunch with women already in science and math careers and participate in a college and careers workshop.

EYH is a hands-on science and math conference, event organizers said. During the day, the girls will participate in hand-on activities, learn more about science and math careers from MTSU faculty and off-campus professionals and attend a conference with other girls interested in math and science.
