MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —MTSU will present a combination of classical guitar music and compositions inspired by Chinese music in a free concert open to the public.
Swedish guitarist Johannes Möller will perform a variety of classical favorites, Chinese-flavored guitar tunes and his arrangements of Chinese works at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Hinton Hall in MTSU’s Wright Music Building.
Möller, who performs close to 100 concerts each year, won the coveted Guitar Foundation of America prize in 2010, the Bromsgrove Festival International Young Musicians Platform in 2005 in England and the Swedish Ljunggrenska prize in 2007.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in music at the Royal College of Music in London, a master’s degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands, and a second master’s degree at the Amsterdam Conservatory.
Möller will be joined by Mei Han, director of MTSU’s Center for Chinese Music and Culture and an associate professor of music. She will play the zheng, a long instrument with 21 strings that are plucked.
Han, an ethnomusicologist, has performed on five continents and recorded eight solo and chamber music albums. For 10 years, she was a featured soloist with the Zhan You Ensemble, one of the most prestigious groups of its kind in the world.
