MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —The deadline for a STEM camp at MTSUfor underrepresented middle school girls is Tuesday, June 5,and openings remain, a camp official said.
The fifth- through eighth-graders will spend one day during the week of camp (June 18-22)to learn about each letter in STEM — one day on science, one on technology, one on engineering and one on mathematics — and the closing day will include a group activity to develop a poster describing one activity covered during the week the students particularly liked.
Those underrepresented in STEM fields include African-American, Hispanic and Native American girls.
The cost is $70 per person (lunch and snacks provided) with limited scholarships available. To apply online, visit http://stem4.mtsu.edu/sums/.
The camp will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday, June 18-21, and from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 22, starting in Kirksey Old Main each day. Parents are invited to view students’ presentations at 1:30 p.m. June 22 in KOM Room 320.
“All of the activities are fun, hands-on and age appropriate,” said Ginger Holmes Rowell, interim director of the MTSU Tennessee STEM Education Center.
