MURFREESBORO — A
professor who combines a poet’s soul with an educator’s mind will be the guest
on the next “MTSU On the Record” radio program.
Host Gina Logue’s interview with Amie Whittemore, an
instructor in the Department of English, will air from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday,
Oct. 10, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5
and www.wmot.org.
“Glass Harvest,” Whittemore’s inaugural book of poems,
captures the essence of her Midwestern upbringing in all of its facets, including
relationships, isolation and the wonder of nature. The broadcast will feature
the Momence, Illinois, native reading some of her poetry.
Whittemore said it took her eight years to finish the
volume, but she said she tells her students that rewriting is essential to good
writing.
“You can start out with something wonderful, but revision is
where you refine your thinking, as well as how you convey that thinking,” said
Whittemore. “If I can get students to rewrite something and then carry that
habit forward, I feel like I’ve done something good.”
