[435a) ‘MTSU On the Record’ shines spotlight on new dance degree

MURFREESBORO — The only full bachelor of science degree in dance at any public university in Tennessee will be the subject on the next “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Meg Brooker, an assistant professor of dance, will air from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, May 7, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.

The Tennessee Board of Regents approved the new degree track in one of its last official acts as MTSU’s governing body. Twenty-two eager dancers auditioned to be included; 18 were accepted. Those who confirm will begin classes in fall 2017.

“Students will study a combination of different levels of technique classes, dance history and theory, theories around kinesiology, anatomy and healthy training for the body, as well as choreography and improvisation,” said Brooker. “One track will focus on performance and choreography, and the other track will focus on pedagogy and practice.”

Brooker will accompany three other dance students to Russia May 10-23 for a combination of research and recitals. They are slated to perform at the People’s Friendship University of Russia in Moscow May 14 and 15.
