13th annual Flute Festival at MTSU to feature guest-artist recital
MURFREESBORO — The 13th annual MTSU Flute Festival, featuring guest artist Kate Lukas of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. in the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.
A public recital by flutist Lukas and MTSU faculty pianist Lillian Pearson will begin at 1 p.m. in Hinton Hall on Jan. 26. Lukas will then present a master class for festival participants at 2:15 p.m.
Admission for the MTSU Flute Festival is $20 for early registration or $25 at the door for participating flutists. Members of the public may register as guests for one or all of the public concerts and competitions for a $5-per-person charge.
The day’s events include an 8:30 a.m. opening session in Hinton Hall for a rousing beatbox performance by MTSU School of Music adjunct instructor Abi Coffer. Group sessions “Presto” and “Andante” will follow for flutists ranging from beginner to professional.
Flute exhibits featuring manufacturers, flute products and flute repair will open at 9 a.m. Thirty minutes later, Lukas will offer a special morning session, followed at 10:30 a.m. by the High School Solo Competition, Junior Solo Competition and Orchestral Excerpts Competition.
The day’s events will conclude with a final concert featuring the winners of the high school and junior competitions, members of the Festival Flute choir and more.
Lukas, who is a professor of flute at Indiana’s Jacobs School of Music, is a former faculty member and Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and a former member of the faculty of the Royal Academy of London. She has served as guest principal flutist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra, among others, and was principal flute for the Santa Fe Opera Company.
While a member of the Composers Ensemble and Music Theatre Wales, Lukas, a former Fulbright Fellow, worked with Berio, Xenakis, Elvis Costello, Thomas Ades, Birtwistle, Maxwell Davies and other prominent composers. She’s also performed numerous broadcasts of solo and chamber music repertoire for the BBC, Radio France and regional German radio stations.
