MTSU Students, Graduates Await Annual Career Fair Oct. 7

(MURFREESBORO) — MTSU’s Career Development Center will bring in more than 90 organizations from business, industry, government, nonprofit and graduate/professional schools for the 2009 Fall Career Fair Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Representatives from a wide-range of industries and fields will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Murphy Center track level, providing information on full-and part-time career-related employment, co-op and internship opportunities as well as educational requirements and demand for graduates in various career fields. Graduate and professional schools also will be on-site with admission information.
The Career Fair is open to all MTSU students and graduates, said Karen Austin, associate director of the career center.
“Attendees should come with multiple resumes, in appropriate business attire and having researched registered employers,” said Austin, who added, “They can log in to their Lightning Jobsource account, where they can view a list of employers attending with the majors they are interested in and jobs they are recruiting for.
“Again, in this very competitive market, candidates must present themselves as prepared, competitive and viable to stand out in the milieu.”
Austin said employer participation has witnessed a one-third drop, but “most schools nationwide are down about 50 percent. Opinions may differ, but I don’t think it is necessarily a sign of the economy getting better as employers desiring MTSU students over others. Our students work, and therefore have an established work ethic and need less orientation and training than other new college grads.”
Austin said the MTSU fair would have several graduate and professional schools registered that may offer an alternative to certain students.
For more information, contact the Career Development Center at 615-898-2500 or online at mtsu.edu/~career. Bill Fletcher serves as director of the center, which is located in Keathley University Center Room 328.
