[183] ‘MTSU On the Record’ explores unique Africana Studies degree track

MURFREESBORO — The next edition of the “MTSU On the Record” radio program will shed some light on the “Dark Continent.”

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Louis Woods, director of the Africana Studies program and an associate professor of history, will air from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.

MTSU’s Africana Studies major is the first one to be offered in the region and the only one in Tennessee that offers a choice of a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree.

A study-abroad class in the west African nation of Senegal is available to Africana Studies majors. Academic topics include not only the history and culture of people of African descent but also race relations, political institutions and socioeconomics.

“Linguistically, culturally, Africa is a lot more diverse than most parts of the world, definitely more diverse linguistically than Europe,” said Woods. “There are countries like Nigeria that have a range in languages from … as little as 125 to 250.”
