MURFREESBORO — The
nature of effective leadership will be the topic of the next “MTSU On the
Record” radio program.
Host Gina Logue’s interview with Leigh Stanfield will air
from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug.
9, on WMOT-FM (89.5 and www.wmot.org).
Stanfield, a communication studies major from Soddy-Daisy,
Tennessee, presented her research in May at the 2015 NCA Undergraduate Honors
Conference at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Her paper, titled “Prototypicality and Punishment in
Leadership,” found that “do as I say” leadership is more effective than “do as
I do” leadership. She studied the MTSU Band of Blue as her research subject.
“Punishment-style leadership is kind of a misnomer,” said
Stanfield. “It actually refers to punishments and rewards, and, so, it’s
basically just a leader that has punishment or reward power in the group.”
