[239] ‘MTSU On the Record’ examines how to manage musicians, singers

MURFREESBORO — The movers and shakers behind the singers and musicians are in the spotlight on the next edition of the “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Paul Allen, an associate professor of recording industry, will air from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, and 8 to 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, on WMOT-FM (89.5 and www.wmot.org).

The third edition of Allen’s book, “Artist Management for the Music Business,” was released recently with a new chapter on entrepreneurship and expanded and updated social media information.

In addition, the book contains information on income from live performance, songwriting and recording, and examples of artist management contracts, partnership agreements for band members and recording contracts.

Allen also includes lessons learned from the careers of numerous top managers, including Rene Angelil (Celine Dion), Sharon Osbourne (Ozzy Osbourne) and Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin).

“You need to be able to show those who can make you a big star that you can make money and understand that it’s a business, not something that is just limited to expression of art,” said Allen.
