MTSU guest lecturers to tackle occupational licensing, education reform

MURFREESBORO—The MTSU Department of Economics and Finance is hosting two guest speakers this month to address occupational licensing and education reform, respectively.

Professor Frank Stephenson of Berry College, who writes on a variety of public-choice and sports-economic topics, will lecture on "Want a Job? Get a License" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.

The lecture, which will be held in Room 100 of MTSU’s Davis Science Building, will focus on occupational licensing with some particular discussion of the 150-hour rule in accounting.

On Wednesday, March 28, economist David Figlio of Northwestern University will lecture on "The Pitfalls and Promise of Market-Based Education Reforms."

That talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Room 102 of the University’s Wiser-Patten Science Building.

Figlio's recent work focuses on education reform, particularly vouchers, charter schools and teacher assessment.

Both lectures are aimed at undergraduates, but the public is welcome to attend.
