TBR NOW REQUIRING CHICKENPOX VACCINE FOR ALL NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS

MURFREESBORO—Effective July 1, 2011, the Tennessee Board of Regents is requiring all new and fulltime college and university students in the system to obtain and provide documented proof that they have received two doses of the varicella immunization (chickenpox) or can show proof of immunity to the disease.

The Varicella vaccinations are available for new students at Middle Tennessee State University at Health Services located in the Health, Wellness and Recreation Center on campus.

In addition, all health-science students who expect to have contact with patients will be required to show proof of protection against hepatitis B prior to pursuing their work in this field of study.

Currently enrolled students are exempt from the new requirements. Other conditions for exemption include students enrolled only in online courses and those born prior to Jan. 1, 1980.

These newer requirements are additions to the standard immunizations for measles, mumps and rubella that have already been in effect.

Specifically any new full-time student (12 hours or more for undergraduates and 9 hours for graduate level) who attends an institution of 200 or more students must receive and provide proof of two doses of varicella or provide laboratory evidence of immunity. If a student has a family history of varicella disease, a health practitioner also may offer documentation to that effect as proof.
