[218] ‘MTSU On the Record’ hails students competing in Southern Literary Festival

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —A tradition among Southern writers for generations will be the focus of the next “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Jennifer Kates, a lecturer in the Department of English, will air from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, and from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.

Through Monday, Dec. 3, Kates is accepting creative writing from undergraduates for entry into the Southern Literary Festival. This year’s contest is slated for April 11-13 at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee.

Robert Penn Warren was one of the founding members of the festival, which dates back to 1937. Such heralded authors as Eudora Welty, Shelby Foote, Katherine Anne Porter and Flannery O’Connor have attended the festivities over the years.

College authors will compete in a variety of categories, including poetry, short story, one-act play, formal essay and creative nonfiction. Kates said the festival not only offers students cash prizes. It represents a very unique chance to grow as an author.

“Even those who don’t place in the competition get to attend classes and readings and network with a lot of really great writers and up-and-coming writers,” Kates said. “There aren’t a lot of opportunities like that for undergraduates.”
