MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —The Martial Arts Club of MTSU invites you to join its members in the fight against lung cancer.
The group will lead a Fright Night Walkathon from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, starting from the MTSU Recreation Center in support of The Huff Project, a nonprofit organization based in Franklin, Tennessee, and dedicated to investing in the development of successful lung cancer treatments.
Stephen Huff, the founder of The Huff Project, is slated to walk in the event. Huff, a former pitcher in the Chicago White Sox organization, was diagnosed with stage IV inoperable lung cancer in 2017 at the age of 29, even though he was an athlete who had never smoked.
Doctors found that Huff’s lung cancer resulted from a rare genetic mutation called anaplastic lymphoma kinase, or ALK. He has undergone treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and now works as a teacher for Williamson County Schools. He founded The Huff Project to raise money for research for all types of lung cancer.
Participants will enter by going to https://www.customlink.com/fundraising/fright-night-walk-a-thonto purchase T-shirts or make donations to serve as entry fees. All proceeds will go to The Huff Project.
“The shirt receipts and donations act as entry slips into the costume contest, where people have a chance to win a medal in four different categories,” said Cheyenne Reed, secretary/treasurer for the Martial Arts Club.
Those categories are Best in Show, Most Creative, Best Pet and Most Original.
