[274] ‘MTSU On the Record’ looks at how life experience enhances college retention

MURFREESBORO — Getting college credit for what you’ve learned in life is the subject of the next “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Dianna Rust, director of prior learning assessment, will air at the program’s new week day and time from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, and replay from 6 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org.

With professor emeritus and former director of prior learning assessment William Ikard, Rust conducted a study of nontraditional students who created a portfolio of their pre-MTSU education in an online course. They found that the portfolio process was associated with improved student outcomes.

“During the course, what they would do is work on finding the correct documentation of the learning and then writing and reflecting about their learning,” said Rust. “So there is some new work that has to be produced.”
