‘H x W x D’ exhibit brings 3 new regional artists to MTSU’s Todd Gallery

MURFREESBORO—MTSU’s second art exhibition of 2012, “H x W x D,” will feature regional artists Kristina Arnold, Ron Lambert and Jackson Martin in the University’s Todd Gallery from Feb. 7 to March 1.

“The artists unite to create an exhibition that explores materials and spatial relationships through media such as, glass, metal, cloth and soil,” explained gallery secretary Eric Snyder. “Collectively, their work challenges perceptions of the body and its environment by creating sculptural works that move beyond object and act as environment.”

Arlington, Va., native Arnold received a degree in community health from Brown University and moved to Nashville to pursue a career in public health, working as a research associate in the pharmacoepidemiology division of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
After five years she returned to her first love and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Tennessee. She has worked in collections management for the Frank H. McClung Museum in Knoxville and the Parthenon Museum in Nashville. In 2005 she joined the faculty of Western Kentucky University’s Art Department, where she also serves as gallery director.
Arnold’s honors include the Individual Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts for the State of Tennessee in 2005 and an Individual Artist Grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women in 2007. She has been an Emerging Artist in Residence at Pilchuck Glass School, a visiting artist at the Worcester Center for Crafts and an artist-in-residence at the Municipal Gallery in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Working mainly in video and sculpture, Lambert investigates the intersection between psychology and the environment. He received his MFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, has taught at Cornish College of the Arts, Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle and at his alma mater, where he received an excellence in teaching award in 2008.
Lambert currently is an assistant professor at Watkins College of Art and Design in Nashville, and his work has been shown at the Catherine Person Gallery in Seattle, Athens Institute for Contemporary Art in Georgia and other prestigious facilities around the country. His award-winning work is in the Joseph Vascovitz collection and in the collection of the Tacoma Art Museum.
Martin, who was born and raised on a commune in rural Tennessee, moved to Nashville at age 10 and graduated from Hume-Fogg Academic High School. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at MTSU in 2004 and an MFA from the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2007.
Martin has exhibited his work nationally at venues such as Flashpoint in Washington, DC, Sculpture Key West and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, Mich. Most recently, his work was chosen by Elisabeth Sussman of the Whitney Museum for a group exhibition at Viridian Artists in New York City. He lives in Charleston, S.C., where he teaches at the College of Charleston and works for the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.
All exhibitions at MTSU’s Todd Gallery are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; the facility is closed on state holidays.
