‘MTSU ON THE RECORD’ PROBES LIMITS OF LIFE DURING WARTIME
Warrantless Wiretaps, Gitmo Detainees, Topics Ripped from the Headlines

(MURFREESBORO) – The complicated relationship between wartime presidential powers and federal court decision-making is the focus of this week’s “MTSU on the Record” with host Gina Logue at 8 a.m. this Sunday, Oct. 3, on WMOT-FM (89.5 and wmot.org).
In her new book, Zones of Twilight, Dr. Amanda Di Paolo, assistant professor of political science, asserts that federal courts most often decide rights-based claims during periods of war on separation of powers rather than on Constitutional issues. In other words, the judiciary bases its rulings on whether Congress authorized the president to limit civil liberties rather than on whether the limitations themselves are unconstitutional.
Some of the recurring wartime issues Di Paolo examines include military detentions, warrantless electronic surveillance, emergency economic powers and freedom of speech.
