(MURFREESBORO)—Dr. Lynn Rice-See, MTSU piano professor, will open the 2006-2007 concert season for the McLean School of Music with a solo piano performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, in the Hinton Music Hall of the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.
Rice-See will perform Aria by J.S. Bach, Sonata in B-flat Major, by Franz Schubert, Sonata op. 1 by Alban Berg and three selections from Iberia by Isaac Albéniz.
"Iberia by Albeniz is a set of 12 pieces depicting areas or towns of his native Spain," Rice-See said. "The three I have chosen are Evocation, the first piece, which sets the stage for the following pieces; Almeria, which depicts a town on the Mediterranean; and Triana, which vividly evokes a quarter of the city of Seville."
Regarding the Schubert sonata in B-flat, Rice-See said that it was his last and completed only weeks before his death in fall 1828.
"(This sonata) is a profound work which, following his angry C minor sonata and his resigned A major sonata … displays a deep serenity mingled with regret," she said.
Rice-See commented on Berg's sonata, saying that it was his only piano sonata.
"It is a one-movement tonal work with such wrenching dissonance throughout that it is closely allied with the Expressionist school of painting of the same time," she noted.
The Sept. 10 concert is free and open to the public.
