Performances Dedicated to Anniversaries in Anticipation of MTSU’s Centennial

(MURFREESBORO)—The Stones River Chamber Players, artists in residence at Middle Tennessee State University, open their 2010-11 concert season at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in Hinton Hall of the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.

“In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of MTSU in 2011, our season is dedicated to anniversaries,” said Angela Deboer, professor of horn in MTSU’s School of Music and the co-coordinator of SRCP.

“The first concert of the season is a birthday celebration containing works by composers with milestone birthdays in 2010. We will begin with Samuel Barber, born 100 years ago in 1910, and continue with works by Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann, who were both born 200 years ago in 1810,” she explained.

SRCP will perform “Selected Songs” and “Summer Music, Op. 31” by Barber; “Rondo in C Major, Op. 73” for piano duo by Chopin and “Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 88” by Schumann. The performance is free and open to the public.

"We find exciting virtuosity and beautiful lyricism throughout this early Chopin work,” Arunesh Nadgir, a newly appointed MTSU piano faculty member, said of “Rondo in C Major.” “It really does have something for everybody."

MTSU faculty violinist Andrea Dawson said the Schumann trio piece is a “a charming conversation between the three instruments, which ranges in character from sweet to passionate to humorous and quirky."

SRCP comprises a dozen-plus players who divide into multiple configurations to present an exciting variety of chamber music. In addition to Deboer on horn, Nadgir on piano and Dawson on violin, the Nov. 15 concert will feature other MTSU faculty members: flutist Deanna Little, oboist Laura Ann Ross, pianist Lynn Rice-See, tenor H. Stephen Smith, bassoonist Maya Stone, clarinetist Todd Waldecker and cellist Xiao-Fan Zhang.
