MTSU JAZZ FESTIVAL TO WELCOME COMPOSER/ARRANGER DAVE RIVELLO
Performance with MTSU Jazz Ensemble I Planned March 19 in Wright Music Building

MURFREESBORO—The MTSU Jazz Festival will welcome guest composer and arranger Dave Rivello in the final Jazz Artist Series Concert of 2010-11 on Saturday, March 19, in the Wright Music Building at MTSU.

The concert, which will feature Rivello and the MTSU Jazz Ensemble, will begin at 7:30 pm in the WMB’s Hinton Hall. The performance is free to MTSU students, faculty and staff; tickets are $15 for the general public and are available at the door or may be reserved in advance by calling 615-904-8362 or e-mailing daliquo@mtsu.edu.

This year’s MTSU Jazz Festival will include concerts and master classes with MTSU jazz students, including a free public jazz-arranging and composition clinic at 1:30 p.m. with guest Rivello, a member of the jazz faculty at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York.

“Dave Rivello is really at the forefront of what is going on in jazz composition for the large ensemble,” says Jamey Simmons, associate professor of jazz studies at MTSU. “He has studied with some of the greatest arrangers and composers on the scene, including names like Bill Holman, Manny Albam and Bob Brookmeyer.”

Rivello, who also is the director of Eastman’s award-winning student New Jazz Ensemble, has been commissioned to work on musical pieces by musicians as diverse as Bobby McFerrin, Regina Carter, Randy Brecker and Kevin Mahogany as well as symphony orchestras nationwide. He also leads his own ensemble on a weekly basis; his work may be heard at www.daverivello.com.
